AN award-winning road safety campaign backed by five-time world champion Mick Doohan has been axed by the Gold Coast City Council. The Safe Motorcycle Advanced Rider Training (SMART) courses were scrapped in budget cuts, with the council saying road safety was not part of its "core business". The program has been a road safety success, cutting the region's motorcycle rider death toll from 27 in 2007 to nine last year. The number of fatalities has spiked since the program ended, with eight motorcyclists killed since the final course in September last year. Gold Coast police traffic branch officer Sen-Sergeant Bradyn Murphy said no money had been allocated to the program this year.

Do you live in Australia and ride a motorcycle or scooter? Find a motorcycle parking spot in your city. Most councils have allocated several dedicated spaces to motorcyles close to the CBD. Find them easily and quickly with the Motorcycle Network Parking App. Each state in Australia has different parking rules - and each Local Council governs the areas and the fees. They are all different and you need to know the rules to avoid a parking ticket. For instance: Victoria is the ONLY state that allows you to park on the footpath. If you park on the footpath in any other state you will be fined.Sydney CBD allows bikes to park in car bays without purchasing a ticket - but you MUST abide by the time limits.Perth CBD does NOT allow bikes in car bays at all. You MUST park in dedicated bike bays. These and many other rules make it difficult to park your motorbike legally and responsibly when travelling from state to state. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com. mcnetwork.motoscooterparking

The 4 wheeled road users see it as riders are getting in-front of them mentality, as was stated in the Victorian Motorcycle Safety Inquiry there needs to be attitude change to convince and allow them to see what filtering means to the over all traffic flow We the riders need to be the ambassadors in this message even if filtering is not being trialed in your state or territory as soon as traffic congestion comes up in conversation its our duty to put our case forward and inform the four wheeled road users what the advantage to filtering is for THEM, make THEM feel they are getting all the advantages from us riders filtering.

Road age is working against born-again bikers IT'S a refrain commonly repeated by the people who prepare motorcyclists for the road: to die on a motorbike, it's not necessary to be either young or stupid. An analysis of 25 years of road-toll data ahead of a parliamentary report into motorcycle safety to be tabled in State Parliament on Wednesday shows a steady decline in the number of deaths among riders under 25, and a rise in the death toll for those over 40.

Motorists will be able to turn left at a red light at several Gold Coast intersections as part of a trial to combat congestion. This system operates in other Australian cities and we believe it can save drivers time and reduce congestion. The "left turn red" system already operates in NSW, South Australia, the ACT and the Northern Territory.Under the January trial funded by the Gold Coast City Council, signs will be displayed at certain intersections reading "left turn on red permitted after stopping" in black letters on a white background.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads would like to provide an update about the flood reconstruction works on Mount Mee Road. The works to address landslip sites at Ocean View, where temporary traffic signals are in place, are nearing completion. It is expected that the road at this location will return to two lanes in mid-November 2012, weather permitting. It had been previously anticipated that the road would re-open to two lanes at the end of October 2012, however, additional essential drainage works are required which will impact on the timeframe.

As thousands of motorcyclists head to Phillip Island this weekend for the 2012 MotoGP, drivers everywhere are being warned to be more vigilant and ‘take a longer look’ for motorcyclists in a powerful new motorcycle awareness video.

The video, titled “Take a longer look” highlights VicRoads and TAC figures which show that in 84% of rider fatalities, where drivers turned into, or across, the path of the motorcycle – the driver was at fault. Not the motorcyclist.* (

The Department of Transport and Main Roads would like to advise of a temporary full road closure required on Samford-Mount Glorious Road as part of the reconstruction works underway at Highvale.

The temporary road closure is required to carry out necessary repairs on a section of road which is currently operating as a single lane under traffic signals.

The closure is scheduled to occur on 18 October 2012 starting at 10am for up to four hours, weather permitting. The contractors will carry out the job as quickly as possible to minimise disruption to road users and the Mount Glorious community.

Because the road width is already reduced at this location by landslip damage, the only option for the repairs is to close the road.

Access through this site will be made available to emergency services vehicles if required.........

Issue on Motorcycle Helmets Letter to the Transport Minister
Because there is total confusion when it comes to what is an approved helmets and what the law says and what the interpretation of the road rules by the police is, it has been brought to the MRAQ's attention of this problem to many riders are just paying the fine and not fighting it in a court of law, so here is the start, a letter to the Minister of Transport the sewn in patch in a helmet is under consumer law which means for the point of sale, not road rules......

The MRAQ Committee would like to set the record straight about a newspaper article in the Courier Mail 5th May 2012 which contained incorrect information and makes outrageous inferences. The MRAQ is an independent stand alone Association that is a voice for all riders. The MRAQ is not and never will be influenced by any Clubs, Businesses or Organisations. The MRAQ is an independant organisation run by it's members for the good of all motorcyclists and any other suggestion or inference otherwise is completely wrong. The person the paper states is the President of the MRAQ is NOT the President. The current President is Chris Mearns. Any inference that any club or organisation has or may have had influence over the Association is wrong. This article just shows the contempt journalists and their so called sources have for all riders. The inclusion of multiple stories in the one group further goes to demonstrate the general demonisation of motorcyclists. MRAQ members and motorcyclists in general deserve much better than this and the MRAQ committee will be demanding a retraction from this paper. Signed MRAQ Committee

The two main issues are proposals for 1) O% BAC for ALL motorcyclists, for which there is currently a study underway by Monash University on how to implement that is being funded by the Qld. Transport & Main Roads Dept. and 2) discussion on implementing a motorcycle specific levy. We have been contacted by people that have spoken and written to the Queensland Transport & Main Roads on these and other issues and QTMR's response has been that there is nothing currently planned on these.

The MRAQ has received numerous complaints from riders who have been apprehended for illegal rear mudguards which they understood to be completely legal. For more information on the specific regulations regarding rear mud guards, please refer to page 7 of this document: http://snipurl.com/v92j

Our initial investigations indicate that the rear mudguards on some new motorcycles may not comply with this regulation from the factory. The MRAQ will be in contact with the motorcycle industry and manufacturers to clarify this situation as soon as possible.

A big thanks to the people who have been working on this issue.

There will be no January 2012 Meeting due to Xmas Holidays etc.  Next Meeting is at Lord Stanley Hotel at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 1 February 2012.
